Free Ultimate Furniture Painting Guide

Blue Art Deco Geometric Painted Furniture

I'm not sure why I purchased this cabinet. It is very UN-like most furniture pieces that I choose to restyle. It just spoke to me. Something about the geometrically shaped insets on the front that really got my attention. And now, I have this incredible blue geometric painted piece of furniture!

When I actually got my hands on it...I realized this was a true quality vintage piece that was originally some sort of media cabinet....likely a turntable and speaker entertainment system.....maybe even an early TV cabinet. It had been completely gutted with little evidence of what it used to look like on the inside. The back had also been removed and replaced so it lacked any markings of brand or date.

I immediately knew I wanted to make this into a liquor cabinet/bar....or at least that is what I hope it will be used for.

I also knew I would be leaving MOST of the wood in its natural finish...only using paint to accentuate the patterns that spoke to me at first glance.

I chose shades of blue.

Dixie Belle Paint offers more blue hues than any other color of the rainbow! If you enjoy blues....they've got you covered!

I pulled SEVEN shades of blue...

  1. Haint Blue (almost white)

  2. The Gulf (palest of the turquoise greens)

  3. Mermaid Tail (deepest turquoise)

  4. Pure Ocean (brightest aqua)

  5. Cobalt Blue (bold bright blue)

  6. Bunker Hill Blue (denim blue)

  7. In the Navy (deep navy)

...and just let my creative mind go without much thought...filling in the circles and square and rectangles one by one.....until the doors of the cabinet were completely done.

....and I AM IN LOVE!!!

The original wood color was quite beautiful....but showed age and wear and needed a little boost. I used No Pain Gel Stain in Espresso to just bump the richness of the tone that was already present! This stain is so easy to use! I placed my gloved hand (just to keep stain off my fingers) into an old clean white sock.....and just dipped and wiped!

I used the flat palm of my hand for the large open spaces....and the tip of my index finger to add the stain to the raised trim that ran between all the painted geometric patterns. The stain is super creamy so there are NO drips to chase and it rubs in like lotion!!!

I let this sit for about an hour and came back to lightly wipe off any excess.

This stain is buildable as well....so if I'd wanted to go even darker I could have added another coat. A little bit goes a long way.....so you only need ONE can!!! This stain comes in several colors (even white for a pickled look) and you can check them out here.

I was left with a gorgeous rich wood finish that is the perfect contrast to the soothing blue hues of the cabinet doors.

I then decided to bring out the glam guns!

Time for some gold!!

Using my favorite Liquid Leaf gold paint I painted both the hinges and the hardware! This is a small hint to what others will find on the inside!!

BAM!!!
