This whimsical ombre painted vanity was actually inspired by one of my hand painted gumball machines. I love that! It just proves that you can find inspiration anywhere!
My client saw a gumball machine that I did in what I called cottage style....and wanted one for herself...
..AND this vanity painted in the same colors and style.
She purchased the vanity and drove it to me from another town.
The vanity had already been painted in a pale muted off-white. The paint was in great condition with no chipping or peeling...however I had no idea what was beneath the surface of that paint. When you don't know what lies beneath someone else's paint....it is in your best interest to prime first.
I cleaned first with White Lightning. Then I used one coat of Boss Primer in white.
Here is a close up of the colors I used for this ombre whimsical painted vanity....see the shop section at the bottom of the blog for a complete list of products used.
After prep, I coated the entire piece in a single coat of Buttercream.....which is a color I do not use often....but really liked on this piece.....and allowed it to dry.
I planned to do a color wash with the gorgeous color Sea Glass. I did this by painting heavily at the top of the piece and then spraying with my water spritzer.....and using the same paint from the top and working my way down the body of the piece without ever re-dipping my brush.
It is sort of a reverse ombre and allows the base color of the buttercream to come through. It looks very much like a color blend but is done with just ONE color.
I actually did this on live video and you can see it HERE.

I then painted the insets of the cabinet doors and the underneath side of the vanity with one coat of soft pink and let dry.
I then taped off my stripes and burnished to prepare for painting the next set of stripes in Flamingo. Once all Flamingo stripes were painted I immediately removed the tape to reveal this refreshing set of candy store/ice cream lover looking stripes!
I used the "not yet released" Gemstone Mousse in gold to trim out the doors, drawer and to brighten the original hardware.
After the piece dried...I used the Finishing Pad to buff my paint surface to ensure a soft buttery smooth finish prior to the final finishing coat.
The vanity is sealed in two thin coats of Gator Hide for durability and protection. I used the Applicator Pad to apply it for a super fine finish.
This piece is sweet......and my client is sweeter.......so it's a perfect match!
