I am in whimsical Christmas tree heaven over here y’all!!!
I’ve waited so long to build my own tree from top to bottom….with my own hands…..with zero Hobby Lobby/Target/Michaels decor! Don’t get me wrong…..I love what they have to offer…..and I obviously used them for my ribbons and garland…..
But I wanted a handmade tree by ME….so that is what I did….one project at a time….over the last 8 months with a group of 60 other wonderfully whimsical women!!
When group idea was born in my head…..I had no doubt I wanted it to be a whimsical Christmas tree theme with black and white as the focal colors.
My good friend Pat from Salvaged Soul provided the ladies in the class with the buffalo-checked top hat……so all I needed to do was embellish it! That month’s project was my FAVORITE!!! Adding the large butterfly mold that I’d painted with my Dixie Belle paints and highlighted with ReDesigns Decor waxes….was the perfect enhancement to the large budding roses and peonies and bubbles and pearls and feathers….and even a mini bottle-brush tree! If I could decorate year round with top hats I’d be a really happy camper!
We painted our very own knock-off Rae Dunn ornaments…..the well known simple white with childlike script……which turns out to be a little nerve-wracking to make it so simple!!!
The tree is filled with traditional balls in black and white patterns…
finial shaped ornaments…
hearts with added Redesign molds…
miniature top hats loaded with details (another favorite of mine)…
and lots of mixed prints such as leopard, checks, and stripes!
Every single ornament is painted by hand…no sprays….no decoupage…..no transfers…..just my fingers and a brush and paint!
My bow making skills have improved…..however, I don’t plan to tie any more bows until this time next year! LOL! Let’s just say that was NOT my favorite part! I don’t find it difficult…..just not very exciting! But I must say the addition of the large bows and ribbon really brought the tree to life!
The addition of my grandkids’ names was an afterthought! I was inspired by one of the ladies in the group…Nancy Deliz…who did this for herself! I literally begged her to make some for me…because I refuse to own one of those fancy machines that make cut-outs and such….and she obliged and I am so thankful! It just makes the tree so much more personal and the kids really love seeing their names on the tree!
Now can we talk about that tree skirt??? My daughter in law made me a tree skirt like this years ago…..and told me it was made without any sewing! And if you have followed me for very long…you know I do NOT sew!!!
So……with her guidance ……I learned this “no-sew” technique and brought my ladies along with me! It is sooooooooo easy…..and so rewarding……as long as you don’t mind losing a few of your fingerprints…#dangersofhotglue !!
I’m enjoying seeing the tree skirt for now….because as you know…..the pile of gifts will soon cover it up….and no one will even know it’s there!
I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the ladies that trusted me with this Christmas tree group idea!! It really was a huge success because of THEM! They signed up….they showed up……they completed the projects……and they’ve built their trees!
Now we’ve gained even more than beautiful Pinterest worthy trees…..we’ve gained a bond and friendships through our creative desires….and that is a beautiful thing!
I hope you will join me next year for the building of the 2020 tree!
Nope….I don’t need another tree….but someone does!
I’ll build the tree all year and then donate it to one of my favorite local children’s charities! Now THAT really excites me!!
The theme will be different….but the vibe will be fun and the results will be just as good!
