The pop-art look is one of my faves....and adding it to a headboard is such a great place to feature the sunburst design. This Tropicana bed shows off that sunburst design!
This bed is originally from the old Bombay company. It was a rich dark and very shiny finish that unfortunately has a dated look to it.
It is also a difficult finish to paint if you don't prep your piece correctly. I can say this with 100% certainty as my first attempt to paint this bed was a total disaster....and it happened on LIVE video! Yup.....sure did! This is what I know.....
~ the uber shiny finish needs SLICK STICK!!!
~ do NOT skip this step if in doubt the tiniest bit (like I was).
~ save yourself the trouble and time and thank me later!!
Tropicana Bed Creative Process
AFTER the fail....and all paint peeled and sanded....and even the first transfer attempt that wouldn't stick was also removed and sanded.....I did the following:
One coat of Dixie Belle problem-solving Slick Stick (a miracle in a jar for slick surfaces).
One coat of Dixie Belle BOSS primer in white (for color/bleed block)
Painted entire inset where sunburst would be in Fluff.
I painted all the outer trim of the headboard in Caviar.
I then chose Palmetto for the tiny beaded trim and painted it with one coat
I tape off my sunburst pop-art pattern and painted every other section with Caviar.
I then applied the Redesign with Prima Tropical Paradise design transfer to the center portion of the bed.
And lastly....I used my finger to apply Eternal gold decor wax to the already painted beaded trim.....just to add a touch of glam. I used the same finger application technique to the very top center shell motif carving.
The entire bed has been top coated in Dixie Belle's Clear Top Coat in satin.
