I never imagined this patriotic denim jacket would be my favorite painted denim jacket to date! I am a huge lover of Americana and Patriotic art.....and this just might be my favorite red, white and blue project that I've ever done!
If you are looking for a simple design to try for your first painted denim jacket project....this is it!
I completed this patriotic denim jacket in just a couple of hours and it took ZERO drawing or painting skills!
Below I will take you through each step of the process.

Step-By-Step: How to Paint a Patriotic Denim Jacket!
Front Pockets
Using a small craft brush apply a slightly thinned with water Cobalt Blue in a single coat to the front pockets.
Once dry, use a Sharpie Oil Based Marker to draw small stars spaced evenly.
Apply Fluff (also slightly thinned with water) to the pocket flaps. Once dry, use a small artist brush to freehand red stripes in Honky Tonk Red.
PRO TIP: When the final design is dry, use the Sanding Sponge to lightly scuff and soften your finish.
Back Lower Jacket
Lay the jacket out flat. Thin the Fluff with a small amount of water. Apply a single layer of Fluff to the center of the back of the jacket.
Once dry use the sanding sponge to scuff the painted surface and brush away any dust and residue.
Apply painters tape in vertical stripes.
Burnish your edges with a small amount of Fluff.
Once dry, apply full strength coat of Honky Tonk Red to non-taped stripes.
Immediately remove the tape and allow stripes to dry.
Use full strength Fluff to touch up any areas that paint may have seeped under the tape.

Back Upper Jacket
Position your jacket on a firm pillow or sewing form to fully expose the upper shoulder area of the jacket.
Apply a thinned out coat of Fluff and let dry.
Using stamps of your choice, decorate this upper area. I used IOD type set stamps.
I lay out my word...then press the stamp press on to them.
I then turn that over and apply Caviar black to each letter using the blue sponge. I then pressed the letters into place with firm pressure and lift the stamps directly from the jacket.
If a letter did not fully stamp....I simply added more paint to that individual letter and re-stamped it using my fingers to apply pressure.
Once dry, use the Sanding Sponge to scuff the entire back surface and wipe away any dust.
Sealing the Finished Denim Jacket
Heat press all the painted areas using an iron on low heat and a cup towel.
Finish off your jacket by applying a small amount of Best Dang Wax in clear in a circular motion with a large round natural Best Dang Wax Brush to all the painted areas.
PRO TIP: I usually recommend waiting 30 days to wash if needed. I wash in cold water, gently cycle....and hang to dry.
