I'm so excited to bring you this DIY painted gumball machine!
A "blue Cinderella gumball machine"....was requested by one of my #fancygrands (however it was a gift from Santa...so shhhh!)
I knew within minutes of the request that I would be combining Dixie Belle paints and Wood U Bend molds to create a royal painted gumball machine fit for a princess!!
I started with the basic red gumball machine that we all grew up with.
(oh....and I've listed all products needed for this project in the shop section at the end of this blog for you to just click and shop).
After dismantling the body of the machine...I gave the red metal portion a single coat of Dixie Belle's Slick Stick. It has a strong bonding agent that allows you to paint on any slick surface successfully. I used a pouncing motion with my brush to add this primer....to give a textured appearance.
I then painted a single coat of Haint Blue (also by Dixie Belle) using the same pouncing technique.
While that dried...I began layering and painting my molds. I chose a gorgeous metallic by Dixie Belle called Pacific. While the Pacific was still wet...I lightly brushed a bit of Peony over the top to give a deep purple hue as the blue mixed with the pink. I let this dry.
I added my black and white whimsical trim to the base of the machine using Fluff and Caviar....and let dry.
I then heated my molds (top of machine & bottom of bowl) per the WoodUBend instructions.....and shaped them to the domed glass. I applied E6000 glue to the mold and held in place on the glass. Once applied to the glass I then reheated the mold in place...and held firmly with my hands until cool. I did this to both molds on the top and bottom of the dome.
The mold that surrounds the silver coin plate is actually one mold that has been cut in half. I warmed the mold and cut it right down the center with a knife. It just cuts like putty and is sooooo easy to do! I then followed the same glue process as above.
I finished off the paint with shading and shadowing using a dry brush technique with Cobalt Blue....and final highlights using the Decor Wax Eternal by Redesign with Prima. The gold stripes and polka dots were done with Liquid Leaf gold.
I coated any of the painted areas (both machine and molds) with Clear Coat in Gloss by Dixie Belle.
And there you have it!!!
