Interior door design ideas across multiple doors

Have you ever found that when you really dislike something.....instead of trying to fight against it....it is helpful to just embrace it?

I find this true on many levels.....but especially true in the design of your home. If you cannot demolish whatever feature it is that you don't care for and rebuild......just find a way to accept it for what it is and DO SOMETHING WITH IT that you do like!

This brings me to my laundry room and the passage of TOO MANY DOORS! It was time for some interior door design ideas....

My laundry room (which you have seen before in my Epoxy Countertop blog) is tiny. It is just big enough for a washer/dryer/refrigerator and shop sink. But somehow....the designer (back in 1964) found a way to place 6 full-size doors in this space!! And with the laundry room serving as the pass-through to the garage (aka...my shop), that is a lot of doors opening and closing in just a few feet that should really remain open for passing!

In reality, I would love to de-construct......take down the FOUR closet doors and leave them as open shelving storage. But the organization freak in me will not begin that project until I know I have time to decorate it with stylish paint and matching labeled baskets....which would also require a purge session....and momma ain't got time for that right now.

SO......I decided to embrace the SIX boring much-in-need-of-fresh-paint doors.....and paint them!! I wanted to paint them in such a way that they will be less noticeable as doors....and appear more like a wall! I also wanted to add a little funk....as my laundry room seemed to be leaning to a traditional style..... and I am not a fan!

So here's what happened...

I cleaned the doors with my go-to "prep for any paint project" cleaner...White Lightning. I painted each door in a single coat of Cotton...which is the whitest of white by Dixie Belle. (I tried my fave white first...Fluff....but it was not bright enough for this space).

I measured off the door that leads to my shop first....in 14" spaces from top to bottom on both left and right. Then I taped this off in horizontal lines making sure to "de-tack" my tape on my clothing first.

PRO TIP: I burnished my tape edges with a small amount of Cotton white. Do not skip this step...it is the ONLY sure-fire way to get crisp lines!

I painted every other stripe in a single coat of Caviar (black) and immediately removed my tape.

My first door is now complete in the bold stripe design.

I then measured the set of doors to the right of this door in the same 14" spaces. But this time I taped the stripes in a downward horizontal stripe. I simply pulled my tape from a hash mark on the left down to the next hash mark on the right....vs. straight across.

Again...I burnished with Cotton....and painted with a single coat of Caviar....and immediately removed my tape.

I then moved to the final set of doors on the right and painted these in horizontal stripes again using the same 14" measurements....and the same painting steps listed above.

I used a DB applicator pad to apply two thin coats of Gator Hide to the doors for ultra protection

This project took VERY little time and made a HUGE impact on the space!!! I have received comments from many that they love the change!

I have also received comments from others suggesting a paint or stencil the floor tiles. I really don't like my tile at all and would love to paint it. Unfortunately, that tile runs throughout our entire living areas and there is really no way to JUST do the laundry room. I do hope to have our flooring replaced in the future.

Would you dare paint stripes in your laundry room? Do you think I should have just painted the doors black? That was a consideration! Do you have black doors in your home? What other interior door design ideas do you love? Leave a comment and tell me your thoughts...
