I've also enjoyed trying new techniques each year....and this year is no different!

Painting Directly on the Glass
This was my first time to paint a design directly onto the glass without first applying a glass primer and base coat.
I was inspired by a video that my daughter Hailey sent to me.
She like the natural look of the design and asked me if I could paint a "ranch style" champagne bottle for her ranch owner grandfather-in-law with that same natural vibe.

How to Hand Paint a Champagne Bottle
Glass bottles are very oily feeling so I always wash the bottles down with White Lightning and a good rinse and pat to dry. This removes any oils and will allow the paint to adhere much better.
I always use chalk mineral paint from Dixie Belle Paint. It is highly pigmented which allows you to paint in just one to two coats for a bold color finish. It also sticks to almost anything!!!
If you are looking for a more opaque look, please see my other blogs where I use a bonding/blocking primer first! It's a really pretty look as well.
This look will require you to be free with your drawing skills. I firmly believe that whatever comes from you head and heart and out through your hand and onto your project surface is beautiful art!
So give yourself some grace and set aside your perfectionism.
Drawing out the Design with Posca Pen
I used my Posca pen in white to draw out the ranch logo and my lettering.
The pens are easy to use... much easier than brush lettering.
PRO TIP: If you make a mistake, they will wipe away as long as you do it quickly. Once the paint cures it difficult to remove.
I also used the pen to draw out my fence, the lasso and the snowflakes.
I then used my paint to go back and fill in these drawings with layered color.
I even painted over my drawn snowflakes.....as I really love the look of brushed on paint better than drawn on paint! But it's nice to have the marker to set the outlines.
The vines and florals I just painted as I went....without drawing the outlines first. But if you are less confident or questioning your ability at all....use the pens to offer you support!
This bottle needed to travel within an hour of me painting it....so I did not spray or top coat it in anyway. I just placed it in a pretty box filled with tissue paper and sent it on the road to the ranch!
The good thing about chalk mineral paint is it dries so fast...usually within 15 minutes of applying! As long as the bottle stays dry and the paint has time to cure....a top coat really isn't necessary!
This style is a much faster finish!!!
The more opaque finishes on my other bottles require a primer and this adds a full day to the process.
They are both a gorgeous finished product....so it really just depends on the look you are after....OR the amount of time you have!
A Unique Hostess Gift Idea!!
These bottles make such wonderful personalized gifts for all special occasions.
I hope you are inspired to give this a try!
Enjoy the process......and cheers!
