I am drawn to antique pieces of unusual size and shape. This green china cabinet is one of them.
I’m not sure exactly what its original purpose was…..I’m assuming a china hutch of sorts….with the center glass door being a hint to that. No matter what it was used for or what it will be used for…..it is a beautiful piece in a unique size and I couldn’t wait to paint it!
I followed my standard furniture prep routine….
- Clean with White Lightning and rinse well
- Test for bleed through (this was a bleeder)
- Prime with BOSS Primer of choice (I used gray)
This project began on my Whimsical Wednesday broadcast on St. Patrick’s Day….so I chose to feature every single green that Dixie Belle Paint offers…..across the front. That was actually a lot of fun and it was interesting to see the greens side-by-side.
It left a hot mess though…..and I was forced to narrow down to three greens. I chose Kudzu, Tree Frog Green, and Collard Greens. You can see the transition and blend from lighter at the top to darker on the bottom.
The side doors feature many products….and I’ll tell you about each of them.
I then used the water-based gel stain by Dixie Belle…VooDoo in white….ever so lightly thinned with water and heavily brushed over the entire piece and wipes back quickly with a damp cloth. This gave it an overall white-washed/limestone look.
I used the new lace transfer on the raised panels of each door. It is intricately detailed in a soft white pattern…..hence the name Lace. It serves as a subtle backdrop for layering….but is pretty enough to hold its own as a feature.
I then applied the most gorgeous WoodUBend “drop” to the center of each door as a dramatic feature! This particular mold is HUGE at 12″ long and 7.5 ” wide! It is detailed and ornate and I wish it made sense to add something so grand to every single piece I created! I really enjoyed painting, enhancing, and shadowing around it!
The lower portion of this cabinet was my favorite part…..the building of the bouquet!! I actually combined TWO transfers here….both Floral Romance and Cacti and Succulents…..to create this lush and lively floral bouquet across the bottom of this hutch! I had to hold back here….or I would have covered the entire piece! It gave me the whole “floral arranging” vibe that I’ve always enjoyed! I used two tubes of Floral Romance and 1 tube of Succulent for this look.
I chose to paint the lower skirt in my classic black and white stripes at the very last minute and I’m so glad I did! It is completely unexpected and totally unnecessary…..and 100% whimsical!!!

I worked in golden accents wherever I possibly could using my favorite Golden Gem gemstone mousse paint. The gold on the legs gives this green china cabinet a final glamorous touch! I thin it down ever so slightly with Top Coat Gloss…..which speeds up the dry and cure time….and adds a glossy kick!
The grand finale here is the pop of Plum Crazy on the entire inside of the chest! I wanted to pull the pinks from the florals…..and really liven up the dark inner works of this piece! WIth the center door being glass….I felt the inside happy vibe was important!
The entire piece is protected with Top Coat in Satin finish!
So there you go! One large antique green china cabinet…..ready for a new home!
