Here I go again with this knife-block thing.....but how can I not? I love to share fun gift ideas with you!
It is possibly the easiest DIY makeover in my repertoire!
However today.....I've added a side-kick......the lazy-susan!
I found this knife block at my local Goodwill. The lazy-susan was sent to me by Dixie Belle but it's just a simple wooden round that you can purchase at your local hardware store. The hardware that allows it to spin can be purchased separately. I've listed all products for you in the shop section below.
I cleaned the knife block really well with White Lightning and rinsed with water.
I chose the two scroll molds for the knife block and the trim mold to give the wooden disc a more finished look. I applied all molds by heating them per Wood U Bend instructions and used Titebond wood glue to attach them in place.
The molds are so easy to work with and once heated they are literally capable of bending and curving any direction without breaking! I then painted both pieces in Dixie Belle's Fluff (2 coats) and used my heat gun to force the drying process.
I used painters tape on both pieces to lay out my stripes design. I burnished my tape edges with Fluff and applied heat to dry them. I then filled in the empty spaces with Caviar to create the black and white stripe pattern.
I used the Lemon Drops design transfer by IOD on the opposing sides of both pieces to complement the black and white pattern. The transfer is easy to apply with little to no cracking as you find with some transfers!
I then coated both pieces with a thin coat of Dixie Belle Top Coat in Satin. Once dry I applied black wax around all molds and then wiped back with a baby wipe. This accentuates the carvings on the molds and also is the best way to add richness and depth to your DIY project! I allowed this to dry overnight.
I then coated both pieces with two thin coats of Gator Hide...Dixie Belle's most hardy and water-repellant topcoat.
And that's it...funky and fun gift ideas!
