The Design Plan
I was recently asked by a very special client to create denim jacket art for her.....of a lady with flowers on her head!!
She sent me GORGEOUS paintings of ladies with the most amazing florals on their heads done by trained and fine artists! That is not me!!!
Although I have painted many many denim jackets. See my favorite custom painted denim jackets HERE! I had to tell her I wasn't sure that I was the right person for the job......which wasn't easy!
She let me know that I anything I created she would be happy with and to use one of the images she had sent as inspiration.
Her only request was for the flowers to be pink, red and ivory!

Denim Jacket Art: Abstract Floral Lady
So with much fear and trepidation.....and ALL of her faith in me.....I went for it!
Step 1: Sketching the Design
My favorite part of denim jacket art....is drawing on the freshly painted white background (that I created myself using chalk mineral paint).
Sketching out the design is very exciting to me....and then locking in the design with my Sharpie marker is even more exciting!
By this time, I've usually found my confidence!
Step 2: Time to Paint!
I loved starting with the her face and shoulders first. It reminded me of a giant solid tree trunk with roots....completely grounded and strong!
And then getting to move up into the florals with their bright colors finally adding life to the art!
I love using chalk mineral paints on the denim as it works so beautifully with water and blends like a dream to allow me to highlight and shadow easily!

Step 3: Adding Depth in the Background
Once I had the florals exactly like I wanted them, I filled in the rest of the background with this gorgeous green....which is actually a blend of green and yellow.
I love how it serves as a supporting actor to the center stage florals!
Step 4: Finishing the Design and Sealing for Lasting Wear
To finish this off...as always...I outlined my work using a black Posca Pen.
I heat set the art using a tea towel and an iron (with no steam).
And finally, brushed on a light layer of Easy Peasy Spray wax for lasting wear!
The Finished Denim Jacket Art
In the end, I'm quite pleased.
It is far from a fine art masterpiece....but I'm ok with that!
I'm mostly thankful to my client for her belief in me....and for loving it!
