Custom Painted Men's Denim Jacket: Faux Wood Grain
Both of my jackets for men have been created on black denim from The Gap at their request.
My first men's denim jacket version was for Trevor Underwood and painted in an embossed leather look.
This new denim jacket is for Blake Watts....and I've given it a woodgrain look.
I think both finishes are very natural and masculine.

Base Coat in White on Custom Painted Men's Denim Jacket
This particular jacket was base coated in watered down layer of Drop Cloth....a warm off-white by Dixie Belle Paint.
The next step was a mistake...but I worked my way through it.
I drew out and painted my letters next but I should have waited until I had my background complete.
I drew them out in chalk, traced them with sharpie marker, and filled them in with Caviar Black.
Faux Wood Graining Tool?
I then attempted to use a wood graining tool on the back...with several colors of paint....of which I had to do over the letters...which is why the above was a mistake.
I still don't quite understand why the wood graining tool did not work....but it didn't. It has worked so well on so many other projects:

Matt predicted it wouldn't and he was right.....agh!
Pivoting the Plan: Hand Painting the Faux Wood Grain Effect
After pivoting my plan, I continued to paint in vertical strokes over the letters using several colors of paint at once....sort of making a blend of southwest colors from top to bottom on the back panel.
I then immediately used a damp cloth to wipe away the paint from the previously painted letters.
Once it was dry, I drew a woodgrain pattern with Sharpie marker.
I used the same southwest color palette along with black and dark gray to begin shading and coloring in the knot holes and wood grain that I had drawn.
I also repainted a fresh layer of black over the two initials.
I added a few nails for authenticity.
And lastly.....I shaded in the entire back panel with a deep black surround.
Faux Wood Grain Custom Painted Denim Jacket: Sealing for Lasting Protection
To complete the jacket I gave it a light sanding with fine grit sand paper, brushed off the dust. and heat set it with an iron. And for a final set....I ground in a coat of clear best dang wax to set the chalk paint and leave a nice leather feel to the back panel.
Thank you Matt for modeling this jacket before it was sent off to Mr. Watts! It looks pretty dang good on you!
