Another gorgeous vintage headboard…in blue this time!
I purchased this headboard as part of a full set that looks as if it’s been plucked from a princess movie. Click here to see the bold color transformation on the partner nightstands.
The curves and embellishments are grand to the point of being gaudy! I wanted to redress this piece in full whimsy style accenting every single curve and inset with stripes and checks and bold colors and gold!
However…..I am currently sitting on multiple pieces waiting for new homes and I just couldn’t paint and wait on this one! You can see all my current pieces for sale here…
So I painted on live video and sort of “crowdsourced” the color palette…..and this is where we landed!! Inspired by these vibrant colors of the Mediterranean…
It’s been deemed the “mermaid headboard” due to the colors and the shell motif. I don’t necessarily see mermaid…..but I do see grand beauty! I love anything painted in bold jewel tones….and this one reminds me of sapphires and emeralds and gold!
After a good shower with White Lightning…..she was ready to be redressed! I did not prime.
I began by painting the right and left center panels in a highlighted technique using Antebellum Blue, Cobalt Blue, and Mermaid Tail. I used my new favorite French Tip brush by Dixie Belle. If you haven’t tried it, you really should….it’s a game-changer in the world of highlighting and blending.
I even devoted an entire blog to the French Tip brush…you can see that here.
I then covered the entire bed in Antebellum Blue and let dry.
Painting a piece with heavy carvings can be tricky. I shared my method during a live video….and you can check that out here.
Using a different brush……I moved on to layer with Cobalt Blue in random areas.
I then used a third brush lightly dipped in Mermaid Tail and dry brushed over any and all raised details.
And lastly…I used my fingers to apply Eternal Gold decor wax by ReDesign with Prima overall raised carving edges!
I coated the bed in two coats of Dixie Belle Clear Coat in Gloss for a gorgeous sheen!
This blue vintage headboard is just stunning……and is one of those pieces where it is almost impossible to photograph and capture the way the three blues play off of each other. It is “same hue” layering at its best!!!
If you have the pleasure of painting a heavily carved piece of furniture…I hope you will try using different hues of the same color…..its an easy way to add subtle beauty to an already beautiful piece!
